NICAS Colloquium Online – 24 september 2026
We are pleased to announce a new, online edition of the NICAS colloquium on Thursday 24 september 2026 starting at 12.00 hrs. The colloquium will take place online through Microsoft Teams.
Throughout the year, NICAS organizes a bi-weekly Colloquium featuring short lunch lectures where researchers share updates, present new ideas, or discuss the outcomes of their work. The Colloquium aims to keep the field informed about the latest developments, foster the exchange of knowledge, and encourage collaboration.

A more detailed look on the chemo-mechanical properties of aging lead white oil paints
Abstract
Oil paints are complex polymeric structures which must withstand (external) mechanical stresses for centuries. In this work, we want to understand how mechanical behaviour is affected by the paint’s changing polymeric network structure. We focus on understanding the mechanical properties of aging lead white (LW) linseed oil-based paints in relation to their changing chemical composition. For this purpose, we have used different hydrothermal aging conditions to obtain a large diverse sample set with different chemo-mechanical characteristics. Biography
Sander van Lith is a fourth year PhD student at the University of Amsterdam and has been working on the GoGreen project since January 2023. He holds an MSc degree in Chemical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology. In his project, he combines molecular spectroscopy and microscopy to gain new insights into the chemical processes in linseed oil-based paints under different environmental conditions. His research efforts and (molecular) insights contribute to a better understanding of the chemical changes in an oil paint as a response to climate conditions
