Public Session Expert Meeting NICAS SciRe Project

Scientific Reasoning in Art

15Nov2016 10:00 - 17:00

This day is organized by the NICAS seed money project "Scientific Reasoning in Art: Evaluating evidence in paintings research using a Bayesian approach" (acronym: SciRe).

Within the SciRe project researchers investigate how the Bayesian framework can help clarify complex situations where the weight of evidence needs to be established, focusing on questions of provenance and attribution. Introducing the Bayesian approach, a mathematical framework to calculate the probability of hypotheses based on various pieces of evidence, the SciRe project intends to strengthen the scientific basis for (art) historical and scientific studies of art. Please visit this page for more information about the project.

During the public session of our expert meeting, we will provide an introduction to the SciRe project and to Bayesian methodology. Current approaches to provenance and attribution research will be evaluated, and SciRe researchers will report on the pilot study that is currently being carried out.

A detailed program will be announced shortly.

The event will take place in the Auditorium of the Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam).

As the venue can only host a limited number of people, we kindly ask you to register by clicking the button below.
